What things cost in 1982

In 1982, a gallon of regular gas cost $1.30, a dozen large eggs $0.867 and a pound of white bread $0.532 on average, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Prices overall were 3.3 times higher by 2025, so $1.00 in 1982 bought about as much as $3.34 did in 2025.

What changed

Compared with 1981, the biggest increases were for a pound of sliced bacon (up 23%), a pound of iceberg lettuce (up 18%) and a pound of pork chops (up 12%), and the biggest decreases were for a pound of white sugar (down 14%), a pound of white rice (down 10%) and a gallon of regular gas (down 6%).

Since 1982, 3 of these 23 items have risen faster than overall inflation, so they cost more today even after adjusting for it: a dozen large eggs, a pound of white bread and a pound of sliced bacon. The other 20 are cheaper in real terms than in 1982; the biggest real-terms drops were for a pound of bologna (54% lower), a pound of bananas (45% lower) and a pound of pork chops (43% lower).
