How Blind Ticker works

Every day Blind Ticker hides one company listed on the New York Stock Exchange or Nasdaq. You have eight guesses to name it. After each guess you see how that company compares with the hidden one across seven facts taken from public annual financial data: sector, industry, headquarters state, exchange, revenue, net margin and total assets. Use those comparisons to narrow the field until you land on the answer.

Reading the clues

• Blue with a check mark means that fact matches the hidden company. For revenue and total assets a match means within two percent; for net margin it means within one percentage point.
• Orange with an approximately-equal sign means you are close. Close industry means the same broad industry group, close headquarters means the same US census region, and close revenue or assets means within 25 percent.
• Grey with a cross means no match. When a number is off, an arrow tells you whether the hidden company’s figure is higher or lower than your guess.

A good first guess

Your opening guess should split the possibilities rather than aim for the answer. A company with mid-sized revenue and an average margin gives useful arrows in both directions, so the second guess can jump toward the right scale. Sector feedback is the fastest way to cut the list: once the sector turns blue, stay inside it and use revenue and margin to move between competitors.

Hints, streaks and sharing

You can reveal up to three hints: the sector, the headquarters state and the first letter of the ticker. Hints you take for free add a light bulb to your shared result, so friends can tell a clean solve from an assisted one. Your streak grows each day you solve the daily puzzle and resets if you miss a day or run out of guesses. The share button copies a grid of colored dots that shows how your guesses converged without revealing the company.
